Driveway Dumpsters

How to prevent driveway damage from your dumpster.

Need a dumpster delivered in your driveway?

Driveway dumpsters are a common placement for residential customers renting a dumpster for home projects like kitchen remodels, pools, bathroom renovations, and more!

Why place a dumpster in the driveway?

Especially if you’re renting a dumpster for your home, the driveway is an ideal placement for your dumpster. Aside from many driveways being level and paved with concrete or brick and providing a stable surface, driveways offer close and easy access to the dumpster from the home or garage unit.

Whether you’re loading the dumpster yourself or have workers doing the job for you, placing the dumpster in the driveway can help you avoid lengthy walks to the street with heavy loads of debris.

Protecting your driveway from dumpster damage

Depending on the materials your driveway is made of, you’ll want to take steps to avoid and minimize any damage caused by a dumpster.

Concrete driveways for example are more prone to damage than dirt or gravel and can turn into expensive repair jobs if the proper steps aren’t taken to protect it.

Here are a few ways you can help protect your driveway from damage:

  • Place the dumpster in the most level area of your driveway. Evenly distributing the weight of the dumpster is best accomplished by placing the dumpster on flat and level surfaces.
  • Place plywood or boards beneath the dumpster wheels. You can help avoid scratches and damage to the driveway by placing 4’x8’ plywood sheets or 2”x4” boards beneath the dumpster.
  • Don’t overfill your dumpster. Roll-off dumpsters can hold several tons of debris. Avoid indentations and additional damage by not loading the dumpster over the recommended weight capacity.
  • Check for leaks in the dumpster. If you’re disposing of any liquids, leaking dumpsters can stain your driveway surface. You can help avoid this by placing boards beneath the dumpster or tarping the area where you notice any leaks.
  • Consider weather conditions. Hotter weather on concrete driveways has a higher tendency to create indentations. On dirt or unpaved driveways, rain or snow can create muddy conditions making delivery and pickup more prone to damaging the driveway surface.

Driveway types

Not all driveways are created equal!

When it comes to placing your dumpster in the driveway, some materials are more ideal than others. For example, unpaved or dirt driveways often have unlevel surfaces and are more likely to be impacted by weather conditions.

Rain on dirt driveways creates muddy surfaces which may be difficult to deliver the dumpster on level ground. Especially when the dumpster is loaded with several tons of debris, muddy conditions can make it difficult to pick up the dumpster when your project is complete.

Consider placing the dumpster on plywood or boards if you have:

  • Unpaved or dirt driveway
  • Stone or brick driveway
  • Uneven surfaces

FAQ about placing the dumpster in the driveway

Will a dumpster damage my driveway?

It depends. If you’re renting a smaller dumpster like a 3-yard, then likely you won’t need to worry about driveway damage.

However, if you’re renting a roll-off dumpster and expecting to dispose of several tons of debris, you should consider some of the steps outlined above to help protect your driveway from any damage.

How long can you have a dumpster in your driveway?
In most cities, keeping a dumpster in your driveway is not an issue and can be kept there for the entirety of your rental period (QuickDumpsters offers 7 and 14 days standard rental periods depending on where you live).

Do I need a permit to place the dumpster in my driveway?
Some cities may require a permit for placing the dumpster in a residential or commercial driveway. However, most permits are required only for public right-of-ways like streets, alleyways, or parking lots. To find out if you need a permit it's always best to check with your city’s public works department.

Will a dumpster fit in my driveway?
According to Paving Finder, the standard driveway width is about 10-12 feet wide for single-car driveways and between 20-24 feet wide for two-car driveways. While roll-off dumpsters come in a variety of sizes and widths, the standard width on most dumpsters is about 7-8 feet and can easily be placed in a driveway.

Additional considerations

  • Driveway length. A 40-yard dumpster is about 22 feet long. You’ll want to be sure you have at least 22-25 feet of length to have the dumpster placed in the driveway and avoid any overlap between where the driveway ends and the public right of way or sidewalk begins.
  • Gates and posts. Some driveway entrances are lined with posts which create can make delivering the dumpster in the driveway more difficult as the width is constricted. Be sure you have at least 10-12 feet for the dumpster and the truck to fit prior to delivery.
  • Automatic and locked gates. If you have an automatic gate or manual locking gate in your driveway, be sure to provide your access codes prior to delivery to avoid missed deliveries and pickups.
